ESTIMATOR (Intermediate)

Lockerbie & Hole has helped build Alberta and Canada since 1898. Today, we are one of the largest construction firms providing services to the institutional, industrial, civil and municipal sectors.

The Calgary Office:

The Commercial Division within the Calgary Office works with commercial/institutional and municipal clients to meet their construction needs in various industry sectors.  As a unionized contractor, we provide civil, electrical, structural, and mechanical construction services using a skilled Building Trades workforce.

The Position:

Reporting to the Chief Estimator, the Estimator (Intermediate) is responsible for performing detailed take-offs for commercial estimates and providing estimating support to the estimating department and project management teams.

Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities:

Develop a proposal package from beginning to end (may be more than one at a time). This task may include performing, executing, and or the coordination of all or some of the below listed tasks:

  •  
    • Proposal letter;
    • Bid breakdowns and tender forms c/w labour & equipment rates;
    • The perusal of signature documents;
    • Special tender requirements that may include perusal of bonding, insurance, WCB, and Registration forms;
    • A general knowledge of Contract/Owner/Engineer General Terms and Conditions;
    • Preparation of Preliminary Schedules, Manpower Loading Charts, Work Execution Plans, Organization Charts, etc; as specified;
    • Preparation of "Exceptions and Clarification".

Develop an estimate from beginning to end (may be more than one at a time). This task may include performing, executing, and or coordination of all or some of the below listed tasks:

  •  
    • Develop direct man-hours and have a good understanding of mechanical work with an emphasis on Mechanical Trades (Plumbing, Heating and Process Systems) for the Commercial, Municipal and Light Industrial sector;
    • Have a good understanding of Subcontracted Trades, and procure subcontract pricing towards the formulation of a competitive proposal;
    • Have a good understanding of the Mechanical Trade Scope within the Construction Industry (ACTS);
    • Maintain and update supplier lists for equipment, and procurement of quotations for supply of equipment;
    • Develop Overheads for the estimate that will include all of the following areas: Administration, Construction Equipment, Support Facilities & Services, Labour Additives, and Location Costs;
    • Maintenance and Control of proposal documents;
    • Maintenance and Control of Labour rates and Equipment Rental rates.

Develop the above areas into proposal pricing, whether it is a lump sum, unit price, cost plus or cost reimbursable c/w fixed fee scenario. Pricing to be developed using company methods and productivity's whenever possible for management review prior to proposal date;

Prepare requests for quotations for suppliers, subs, etc.;

Perform accurate quality take-offs as per scope of work;

Be protective of proposals and strategy;

Be organized and have the ability to formulate plans towards meeting tender deadlines;

Supervise Junior Estimators that may work on the estimate as a team;

Treat other employees, suppliers and subcontractors fairly;

Ability to provide an opinion on risk during bid review with management.

Provide project management support on smaller projects.

Knowledge & Skills:

  •  
    • C.E.T. certification or other post secondary education;
    • Minimum of 10 years trade experience in commercial construction beneficial;
    • Good understanding of plumbing and HVAC systems;
    • Significant experience in most facets of plumbing and heating;
    • Basic knowledge of sub-trade scope of work;
    • Good understanding of mechanical drawings and ability to interpret P&ID's;
    • Excellent and proven organizational skills in order to meet multiple deadlines and handle multiple; tasks within a high-pressure work environment;
    • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both written and oral, with sub trades and suppliers;
    • Demonstrates computer software proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel);
    • Basic knowledge of Accubid Estimating Software would be a asset;
    • Ability to interpret specifications as they pertain to mechanical scope;
    • Ability to read, understand and make changes as required through addendums;
    • Ability to value engineer mechanical designs;
    • Ability to know what to look for at Pre-Tender site visits;
    • Ability to prepare basic schedules;
    • Ability to work effectively within a team environment;
    • Willing to travel to job sites as required.
